Hair comes in various colors all over the world. The average Filipino is expected to have a jet black or deep, dark, brown hair. While people from other countries have red, ash-blond, and other such colors of hair.
The color of our hair is mainly determined by a pigment called melanin. Melanin is made by specialized skin cells called melanocytes. A greater amount of melanin gives the hair a darker color. Besides melanin, hair also has a yellow-red pigment that is more visible in people who have lesser amounts of melanin in their hair.
So why do elderly people have gray or whitish hair? This is because of the absence of melanin. As people grow older, less and less pigment are produced and the hair color fades.
Would you want to change your hair color? To be in or to have a change of style? I would think twice first if I were you. Why?
This is because in the past few years, studies have indicated that dyeing the hair may provide risk of certain cancers. Although further research is still needed to clarify whether there is a causal association it would still be better if we are cautious in what we do to ourselves. Being at the head of fashion is not worth it when we're risking our health.
